Afropop Icons and Innovators Awards and Benefit Party 2016

Hosted by Friendship House and sponsored by Daly Disney and Pharma, the inaugural Icons & Innovators Awards and Benefit Party was held Thursday, September 29, 2016, in Washington, DC. The event, organized in partnership with Timothy and Shigeko Bork, was designed to support Afropop.org in its efforts to deliver contemporary African music to millions of listeners in the United States. It brought together over 100 people who enjoyed live music, visual art, food and drink. Afropop Worldwide is the Peabody Award-winning public radio series.

PRI distributes the program to over 100 stations in U.S. and it is available on demand via afropop.org, Sound cloud, and iTunes. The evening highlighted three distinguished individuals who were honored for their contributions at different capacity. They include broadcast legend and Radio personality Georges Collinet host since 1988 of Afropop. Congolese musician Samba Mapangala and Nigerian visual artist and human rights crusader Laolou Senbanjo. Parade du Jour covered the event and captured these images. AlloConakry
